Understanding Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are optional policies that work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay some of the costs that Medicare does not fully cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

At Heart 2 Heart Senior Advisors, Steven Sewald provides no-cost, one-on-one guidance to help Colorado seniors understand how Medigap works, whether it may fit their situation, and how it compares with other coverage options like Medicare Advantage.

This page gives you a clear, plain-language overview of Medigap so you can move forward with confidence and know what questions to ask when we talk.

What Is a Medigap Plan?

A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan is a private insurance policy that helps pay some of the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not fully cover. These plans are organized by “letter” (such as Plan G, Plan N), and within each letter, benefits are standardized by the federal government.

That means a Plan G with one insurance company must offer the same core medical benefits as a Plan G from another company. The main differences are usually the monthly premium, extra features, and the company’s service and stability.

Medigap plans work only with Original Medicare. Medicare pays its share of approved services first, and then your Medigap plan may pay all or part of the remaining approved costs, depending on the plan letter you choose.

Most Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so you typically need a separate Part D drug plan if you want help with medication costs. Steven can help you look at both Medigap and Part D options together so they work smoothly as a package.

Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage

Many people compare Medigap with Medicare Advantage when deciding how to get their Medicare coverage. Both options have pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your health needs, budget, and preferences.

Provider choice and networks: With Medigap and Original Medicare, you can generally see any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare, without needing referrals from a primary care doctor. Many Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks (HMOs or PPOs), which may limit you to certain doctors and hospitals for the lowest costs.

Premiums and out-of-pocket costs: Medigap plans often have higher monthly premiums but may leave you with lower, more predictable out-of-pocket costs when you use care. Medicare Advantage plans may have lower premiums (sometimes even $0), but you usually pay copays or coinsurance as you go, up to an annual maximum.

Travel and flexibility: Medigap with Original Medicare tends to work well if you travel frequently or spend time in different parts of the country, as long as providers accept Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans may have stronger benefits close to home but can be more limited for routine care when you are away from your service area.

Extra benefits: Some Medicare Advantage plans offer extras like vision, dental, hearing, or fitness programs. Medigap plans focus on helping with your Medicare-covered medical costs and usually do not include these extra, non-Medicare benefits.

Steven will walk you through these differences using your real-life situation so you can decide whether Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or another path feels most comfortable.

Who Might Consider a Medigap Plan?

Medigap is not the best fit for everyone, but it can be a strong option for certain types of people and situations. You might want to explore a Medigap plan if:

  • You want maximum provider choice. You prefer the freedom to see almost any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the United States, without worrying about networks or referrals.
  • You travel often or live in more than one place. Snowbirds and frequent travelers often appreciate that Medigap works with Original Medicare across the country, which can make coverage more predictable when you are away from home.
  • You value predictable medical costs. You would rather pay a somewhat higher monthly premium in exchange for fewer surprises when you use medical services, especially if you anticipate frequent care or have ongoing conditions.
  • You are comfortable getting drug coverage separately. You do not mind enrolling in a separate Part D prescription plan and want to tailor your medical and drug coverage pieces individually.

During your conversation with Steven, you can walk through your health history, medications, doctors, and budget to see whether Medigap rises to the top of your options or if another approach is better suited for you.

How We Help You Choose a Medigap Plan

Choosing a Medigap plan is about more than picking a letter. Heart 2 Heart Senior Advisors guides you through a simple, supportive process so you understand your choices and feel confident with your decision.

  • 1. Review your needs and goals. Steven starts by learning about your health conditions, medications, doctors, travel plans, and budget so recommendations are tailored to you.
  • 2. Compare plan letters and coverage levels. Together, you will look at the standardized Medigap plan letters (like Plan G and Plan N) and how each one would share costs with Original Medicare in real-life situations.
  • 3. Look at companies available in Colorado. Steven reviews the insurance carriers that offer Medigap plans in Colorado, compares premiums and rate histories where available, and discusses factors such as customer service and stability.
  • 4. Coordinate with Part D and other coverage. If you need a Part D prescription plan or have other coverage (such as employer or retiree benefits), Steven helps you see how the pieces fit together.
  • 5. Support with enrollment. When you are ready, Steven guides you through the application and enrollment steps, using official platforms and carrier tools, and answers questions along the way.

All of this support is provided at no cost to you, and there is never any obligation to enroll.

Medigap Timing & Enrollment Considerations

With Medigap, timing matters. Understanding key enrollment windows can help you protect your options and avoid potential medical underwriting.

  • Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is a one-time, 6-month window that starts when you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, you generally have the right to buy any Medigap plan available to you, regardless of your health history, and companies cannot charge you more because of past or present health problems.
  • Underwriting outside your open enrollment. After your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, in many situations an insurance company may ask health questions and can decline your application or charge more based on your health. There are some special “guaranteed issue” situations that can give you protected rights, and Steven can explain how those may apply in Colorado.
  • Switching coverage. Moving from a Medicare Advantage plan to Medigap, or changing from one Medigap plan to another, can involve different rules and timelines. It is important to understand what you can and cannot change easily before making a switch.

Steven will walk you through your specific timing, including when you first enrolled in Medicare, any prior coverage, and upcoming enrollment periods, so that you understand what options are available now and in the future.
